Trauma-Informed Advocacy in Maternity Negligence
Understanding trauma. Improving communication. Supporting clients through the legal process.
Join us live on Zoom on Wednesday 10th February 2027, 12-2pm (GMT)
Working with clients who have experienced birth trauma can present particular challenges for legal professionals.
Trauma can affect how people communicate, remember and describe events, respond to questioning, engage with the legal process and experience trust and control.
This practical, trauma-informed training explores how maternity trauma may shape a client’s experience of litigation — and what lawyers can do to create a more psychologically safe environment while continuing to gather clear, robust evidence.
The session explores:
Understanding birth trauma and its potential psychological impact
How trauma can affect communication, memory, trust and behaviour
Trauma-informed approaches to interviewing and taking evidence
Language, choice, control and predictability when working with traumatised clients
Recognising signs of distress, overwhelm and trauma responses
Understanding the difference between a client's lived experience and the clinical or documentary record
Preparing clients for difficult conversations, hearings and other potentially triggering aspects of litigation
Responding appropriately when anger, distress or withdrawal emerges
Practical phrases and approaches that can help clients feel safer and more in control
The impact of working with traumatic material on legal professionals themselves, including vicarious trauma and self-care
The training is designed to be practical, reflective and directly relevant to legal practice, giving participants tools they can use immediately in their work with clients.
Who is it for? Lawyers and legal professionals working with maternity negligence, birth injury and birth trauma cases, including those involved in client care, evidence gathering, litigation and advocacy.
It can also be adapted for any Lawyer working in the clinical negligence sector. This training is £299 per person, but if you would like to sign up a large team, please contact Trudi at trudi@makebirthbetter.org.
The Team
“Please can I say a huge thank you for the 3 days training you have provided to the team. Your attention to detail is exemplary – we have all felt engaged, informed and educated. I am beyond impressed that whilst the training has been delivered virtually you have connected with us regularly through the chat and break-out rooms. I don’t think I have ever felt as heard in a virtual setting, we have so much to take away, reflect on and implement into our service.”
