Things to keep in mind.

There are a few important things to keep in mind before you move on to choosing the right treatment for you:

Don’t go it alone. Understand that you, your baby and others close to you have been through a difficult experience. This is not your fault. Being able to support your baby after what you went through isn’t something you can do on your own.

Give yourself a break. You might be hyper-aroused or troubled by intrusive memories. You need brakes to find your balance. Call on friends or family so you can get rest regularly.

Give it time. Bonding with your baby is a process. You might not feel the ‘rush of love’ you expected. That’s very common. High levels of stress hormones make this more difficult – rest assured you can build a loving relationship with your baby over time.

Choose someone you trust. For your recovery make sure you find a therapist you feel comfortable with. Someone you feel safe with and trust. If not, don’t hesitate to look for someone else.

Consider going private. If you’re facing long waiting lists, perhaps go and look for a private therapist. This can be a large financial commitment but many therapists will offer reduced rates.

Go for evidence-based, qualified and registered. Check that your therapist is properly qualified and registered. There are loads of different treatment options and not all of them have

proven to be effective. We highly recommend going for an evidence-based treatment. You can always reach out to us if you’d like our feedback on a treatment option.

You are unique. Your experience is yours and your healing will be too. This means you need a bespoke treatment plan that suits you (and a therapist who understands that).

Although it went well, I did find it incredibly draining. I would have my sessions in the morning and would be completed wiped out for the rest of the day, so I scheduled it for a day my son was at nursery.
